  • INSIGHT FOR YOUNG ADULTS

    29 Feb. 2008

    by Karen Vance, Cincinnati Enquirer

A few years ago, Sharon Siepel, of Goshen Township, was trying to find a graduation gift for nieces and nephews setting out on their own. She couldn't find one, so she wrote it herself.

The book, "Essential Survival Guide to Living on Your Own" (Howard Books $13.99), will hit bookstores on Tuesday.

The book contains topics from the spiritual (choosing a community of faith) to the practical (how to do laundry). It has chapters devoted to money, relationships and even good citizenship.

"I believe your faith should impact every part of your life, and not just Sunday morning. Faith plays a role in all our decisions, especially as young adults," she said.

Siepel will have a book signing at the Family Christian Bookstore in Eastgate on March 15.

  • Local author publishes survival guide

    28 Feb. 2008

    from Community Press Newspaper, Ohio

"Essential Survival Guide to Living on Your Own" by Sharon Siepel of Goshen, and published by Howard Books, division of Simon & Schuster, is at all major bookstores.

"Essential Survival Guide to Living on Your Own" provides young adults with how-to and hands-on instructions for making it through their first year on their own - without red underwear, over drafted banking accounts and burnt dinners.

Writing from a mother's perspective, Siepel acts as a substitute mom by offering advice and instructions on: Taxes, picking roommates, making time for God and choosing a church, fun, exciting, cheap and legal things to do, menu planning and healthy eating habits, basic first aid, how to sort laundry and more.

With concise chapters and quick tips to make life easier, "Essential Survival Guide to the First Year on Your Own" even provides room for Mom and Dad (or any gift giver) to provide notes and ideas of their own.

Howard Books contacted Siepel about publishing her first book the same day the Navy Reserves called her husband, Kevin, to a year of active duty in Iraq. Ironically, Siepel completed "Essential Survival Guide: For the First Year on Your Own" while surviving on her own for the first time in over 20 years.

Her writing has appeared in "Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul," CBN.com, The Pen and Sword, and the Cincinnati Enquirer. A full-time mother of four, she serves on the staff of Faith Church, Milford, as the associate director of communications and co-leads Faith Writers, a local writers group.

Book Buzz...

I want you to know sincerely that I think your book is one of the best resources out there today for young adults going out on their own! I will be using it this summer for graduating seniors, and I'm sure it will come in handy with 60% of my city is single, and growing. I'm looking forward to using this as a pastor, church planter, and friend to singles in the Phoenix metro area.

Sharon, your work is simply genius in putting together the necessary information that young singles need as they step into the real world! I wish I had this book my first two years for singleness post high school.

Thanks for your work, and Praise God for you gift!

This is a wonderful tool for young adults moving out on their own. It is full of practical advice such as setting goals, what to do when you are sick, taking care of your car, eating well, how to pay your bills on time, and housework. While this may seem dull to some, the author writes in an engaging style that keeps your interest. I had my oldest son look it over (he's 24 and soon to be married) and he said he wished he'd read this before he moved out...he had to learn these things the hard way!

I have never seen a more practical “How to” guide! From how to fry an egg, to knowing when to go to the doctor, to sorting laundry, to registering to vote – every conceivable question a person going out on their own might have seems to be addressed here. This book is easy to read and easy to use. There are checklists and charts, and the author doesn’t assume that the reader has any previous knowledge of the subject. I bought the book with a college graduate in mind, but have read and am using it myself, and I’ve been out on my own for over 30 years!
